The San Diego Children and Nature Collaborative (SDCaN) is a group of about 60 local organizations that share a common concern that today’s children have fewer and fewer opportunities to experience nature. Knowing that children who learn and play in nature are happier, healthier, and smarter, SDCaN works to preserve and expand access to nature experiences for all children in the San Diego region. Together, we’re investing in the future of our children and ensuring a healthier environment for current and future generations of San Diegans. To learn more about the Collaborative, please visit their webpage.
Below are some of Children in Nature's objectives:
1. Expand Nature-Based LearningTo povide hands-on nature-based experiences, working alongside teachers to enhance their confidence and skills in nature-based learning for science, language arts, social studies, and other subjects.
2. Organize Outdoor Nature-based ActivitiesTo provide workshops and onsite mentoring to assist organizations and staff to obtain the skills and resources to successfully offer nature activities in all their children’s programs.
3.Implement Nature PrescriptionsTo support clinics, pediatricians and other health professionals to give “nature prescriptions” and inspire parents and children to spend time playing outdoors and develop lifelong habits of outdoor recreation. Prescription Trails will be identified in nearby parks and open space where families can be encouraged to spend time in nature.
4.Provide Naturalist Guide Fund To lead school classes or after-school groups on “nearby nature” field trips, 90-minute walks to nature. $1,000 for five classrooms in a school or five successive weeks (or months) for after-school group.
5.Create and Sustain Schoolyard Habitats To greatly accelerate the number of school campuses with gardens/habitats. Advice and coordination is contributed by Master Gardeners’ School Gardens Program.
Thank you for you interest in bringing nature into the lives of more of San Diego’s children!
Sincerely, Anne S. Fege, Ph.D., M.B.A., Chair, San Diego Children and Nature Collaborative
